PATIENT EDUCATION

FAQS

1. What is an orthodontist?
Orthodontists are qualified dentists who have completed two to three years of post doctoral advanced specialty training in orthodontics. By learning about tooth movement and facial development, orthodontists are uniquely educated experts in dentistry who straighten teeth and align jaws. Orthodontists diagnose, prevent, and treat dental and facial irregularities.

2. Do you need a referral from a dentist to see an orthodontist?
No, you do not need a referral from a dentist to see an orthodontist, though most orthodontists work hand and hand with dentists to make sure that your teeth are not only aligned but healthy.

3. When is the best time to schedule your first orthodontic visit?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children get a check up with an orthodontist no later than age 7. Even if treatment is not needed at this time, this initial appointment will serve as a baseline from which to monitor growth and development.

4. Can you be too old for orthodontic treatment?
There are no age restrictions for orthodontics. As long as the bone and gum tissue surrounding the teeth are healthy, age is not a factor.

5. What are some early signs of orthodontic problems?
Some obvious symptoms of orthodontic problems are:

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Overbite ("buck teeth")
  • Finger sucking or pacifier use after the age of 6
  • Top teeth behind bottom teeth when biting
  • Being self conscious of smile

When in doubt, schedule an appointment with an orthodontist. If treatment is necessary, early diagnosis can avoid problems that can worsen with time.

6. How much does a new patient visit cost?
The initial visit to our office is complimentary.

7. Are there different types of braces?
Yes, there are many different types of braces, and in most cases it is doctor preference as to which ones are used in the practice. Our office uses ceramic(clear), conventional, and self-ligating brackets. Invisalign may also be an option in certain cases. Dr. Lockard will discuss each type with you and recommend the best appliance for your personal situation.

8.How much do braces cost? What financial options do you have available?

There is no set price for braces. Each case is unique in duration and procedure. Our office offers payment plans and will help you file any paperwork your insurance company requires. We try our best to work with each individual financial situation.

9. How long will treatment last?

All orthodontic cases are different and require various types of treatment. Because of this, treatment time will vary depending upon the nature of the case, growth consideration and patient cooperation. Dr. Lockard will be able to advise you at the outset of treatment as to the approximate length of your treatment.

10. If my child has Phase One treatment, will he need later treatment?

Phase One does not always eliminate the need for further treatment, but it hopefully shortens the duration and involvement of later treatment. The possibility of later treatment will be discussed when Phase One is initiated.

11. Will I need to have any teeth pulled?

The need for extractions has been greatly reduced due to today's advanced orthodontic procedures. However, extractions are sometimes necessary and Dr. Lockard will discuss all of your treatment options with you.

12. How often will I have to see the orthodontist?

Most appointments are scheduled every 6 weeks, but occasionally Dr. Lockard will have to see you more frequently.

13. Can I have after school appointments?

We make every effort possible to assist you in scheduling. Unfortunately, we cannot schedule all appointments for student patients after school. However, because most appointments are scheduled every 6 weeks, patients miss very little school.

14. Do I need to keep up with my regular checkups with the dentist?

Yes, regular check-ups with your family dentist are important while in braces. If you do not have a family dentist we will be happy to recommend one to you.

15. Can I play sports or play a musical instrument while I wear braces?

Yes, we recommend a mouth guard for all contact sports. Braces will not prevent you from playing a musical instrument, but at first additional practice may be required to help you adapt to your braces.

16. Can I wear colors on my braces?

Yes, we offer many colors from which to choose. This way you are able to show your school, sport, or holiday spirit.

17. Does putting braces on hurt?

It does not hurt to have your braces placed, though some soreness will set in the next day and will usually last a few days.

18. Is there a certain type of toothbrush I have to use with braces?

We recommend any toothbrush with soft bristles. Our assistants will discuss proper technique for brushing when braces are placed.

19. Can I wear braces even though I have crowns and/or missing teeth?

Yes, braces will move a tooth with a crown just as they would a natural tooth. Space from a missing tooth can be closed or held open depending on your individual treatment plan.

20. Can I use Invisalign to correct my problem?

Invisalign treatment works well in certain situations. Dr. Lockard will discuss this option with you at your first visit.
